The 1936 Summer Olympics brought many challenges for American runner Jesse Owens. But even with the added pressure, Owens took home 4 gold medals: 1 each in the 100 metres, 200 metres, long jump and as a member of the 4 x 100 metre relay team.

There’s a good chance this will be duplicated in London next month.

Who can forget the “Miracle On Ice”? The United States team, made up of amateur and collegiate players and led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the Soviet team, who were considered to be the best ice hockey team in the world at the time.

Team USA went on to win the gold medal by winning its last match over Finalnd. The Soviet Union took the silver medal by beating Sweden in its final game.
